Coteach joins Claude for Teachers

Today, Anthropic launched Claude for Teachers, giving verified K–12 educators in the US free access to premium Claude capabilities, teaching-specific Skills, trusted curriculum and standards resources, and a growing collection of specialist education tools.

We’re excited that Coteach is one of the launch connectors.

Teachers can now ask Claude to create accurate, classroom-ready K–12 math diagrams using Coteach — without leaving their conversation.

From an idea to a usable math diagram

Diagrams are central to how students learn mathematics.

A well-designed number line can make an inequality visible. A tape diagram can reveal the structure of a word problem. An area model can help students understand multiplication, fractions or algebra in a way that symbolic notation alone cannot.

But these diagrams are deceptively difficult to make well. They need to be mathematically accurate, visually clear and appropriate for how students encounter the concept in the curriculum.

With the Coteach connector, a teacher can describe what they need in plain language:

Use Coteach to create a tape diagram for the equation 3x + 4 = 16.

Or ask Claude to generate several related representations:

Use Coteach to create four diagrams that progress in difficulty from 2x + 5 = 13 to 5x + 2 = 22.

Coteach then produces up to four separate diagrams that can be used in lesson plans, worksheets, practice problems, explanations and scaffolds. The connector supports number lines, tape diagrams, arrays, area models, coordinate planes, fraction models and many other representations.

This capability is the product of a lot of work on a deceptively difficult problem. Over the past year, Coteach has generated nearly one million diagrams for educators, giving us a deep base of authentic teacher requests from which to learn and improve.

On our benchmark of authentic K–12 diagram requests, Coteach produced a classroom-ready diagram 88.8% of the time — nearly 30 percentage points more often than the frontier image models we tested. You can read more about how we built and evaluated Coteach’s diagram system.

That capability is already available throughout Coteach. Today, it also becomes available to teachers working directly in Claude.

Bringing specialist education tools into teachers’ everyday workflows

We believe the next generation of AI for education will combine two things.

First, increasingly capable general-purpose assistants that can understand a teacher’s broader goal, work across different kinds of information and help carry complex tasks forward.

Second, specialist systems built for particular educational problems: understanding a curriculum, interpreting student thinking, designing instructional materials or producing accurate pedagogical diagrams.

Claude for Teachers begins to bring those two layers together.

Diagrams are the beginning

Soon, teachers will be able to use Coteach through Claude to create complete classroom resources — practice sheets, intervention materials, lesson plans and differentiated supports — grounded in the curriculum they're using, with the right visuals embedded throughout.

Over time, we also want to connect the other side of the instructional cycle: what students actually understand. Teachers collect formative assessment evidence constantly — exit tickets, lesson checks, unit assessments, student work — but it often lives in separate systems and is hard to translate into an instructional response. We're working toward a future where a teacher can ask:

What misconceptions appeared most often in yesterday's exit ticket?

Or:

Create an intervention activity for students who got Q4 incorrect on the mid-unit assessment.

Answering those questions requires an understanding of the curriculum, the assessment, the mathematics students are working on and the instructional decision a teacher might make next. That is the specialist layer Coteach is building.

A more coherent experience for teachers

Teachers work across many tools — curriculum, assessment data, student work and classroom materials all in separate places — and the context rarely travels with them. We see Claude as an interface through which teachers can ask questions, create materials and move a task forward, with Coteach providing the curriculum, assessment and instructional expertise behind those workflows. Our goal is to help teachers move seamlessly from curriculum, to classroom materials, to student evidence, to their next instructional decision.

Today's diagram connector is the first step. We're excited to be building it alongside Anthropic.
